What travel insurance actually covers

Travel insurance is one of those things you hope to never use. It is worth understanding before you buy, not after something goes wrong.

What it usually covers

Most policies cover medical treatment and hospital care abroad, trip cancellation for covered reasons, lost or delayed baggage, and delays that leave you stranded. Some add personal liability and a small allowance for missed connections.

What it usually does not

Read the exclusions. Pre-existing conditions need to be declared and are often excluded unless covered separately. Adventure activities like trekking at altitude, diving, or skiing usually need an add-on. Cancelling for a reason that is not on the covered list is the most common surprise.

When to buy it

Buy it when you book, not just before you fly. Cancellation cover only applies to events that happen after you buy the policy, so early purchase protects the money you have already paid.

Keep it handy

Save the policy and the emergency number on your phone, and tell someone at home where to find it. That is the copy that matters if you are the one who cannot reach it.

We can arrange travel insurance alongside your booking and explain what each plan covers.
